For a Florida home, hurricane resistance comes from five things working together: how the deck is nailed, how the roof is tied to the walls, the water barrier under the roofing, the roofing material and its attachment, and the shape of the roof itself. What Makes a Roof Hurricane-Resistant in Florida

Roof deck attachment. Wind failure usually starts when uplift peels decking off the trusses. Current Florida code requires ring-shank nails at tight spacing, a dramatic upgrade over the staples and sparse nailing on older homes, and when you re-roof, the exposed deck must be re-nailed to current standards. This single item is why a new roof on an old house is structurally a different roof.

Roof-to-wall connections. Hurricane clips and straps tie the roof structure into the walls so the entire assembly resists uplift as a unit. On wind-mitigation inspection forms, the difference between toe-nails, clips, and wraps is one of the largest single factors in your results.

Secondary water resistance. A peel-and-stick membrane sealing the deck seams means that even if wind strips the roofing material, the house stays substantially dry. It is one of the cheapest upgrades available during a re-roof and one of the most valuable in a real storm.

3. Architectural shingles, high-wind installed.
